Where the World is Melting: Reykjavík Art Museum – Hafnarhús
Past exhibition
Overview
For more than 40 years, Ragnar Axelsson has documented the dramatic changes in landscapes and habitats on the fringes of the habitable world, traveling to the most remote and isolated regions of the Arctic, to Inuit hunters in northern Canada and Greenland, to farmers and fishermen in Iceland and the Faroe Islands, and to indigenous populations in northern Scandinavia and Siberia.
The exhibition Where the World is Melting presents works selected from the series Faces of the North, Glacier, Hunters and Arctic Heroes. Gathered together at a pivotal moment, the photographs shed light on the changes that are taking place in the physical and traditional realities of the North.
In his ongoing work as a photographer, Ragnar not only bears witness to the land – in search of survival – but, through the lens of his camera, illuminates the personal histories of inhabitants in these circumpolar landscapes for us.
